zuma cowl - free pattern

Oh hi there folks.

Autumn is finally here, I got up in the dark this morning (for reals) and I'm all over the jumper, socks, boots, scarf, coat combos. Yahoo! I love me some autumn.

In honour of my favourite season I was playing around with some super chunky yarn (only for the cold weather yo) and decided to make some GIANT granny squares, GIANT GRANNIES come to take over the world, hide the best china! Well, me and Mrs Granny Square are totally back in love again because the result was and is bloody fabulous. Super chunky and granny squares are a match made in crochet heaven. After much humming and hawing about what to do with said gorgeous, chunky things, I decided their best life would be as the most super-funky cowl ever.

The pattern is very easy, even the most beginner of beginners could manage to knock one of these corkers up in a few hours.

Pattern

You will need: five different shades of your favourite chunky yarn. I used:

Rico Essentials Big in Berry

Drops Eskimo in Light Blue, Off White, Camel and Dark Grey

10mm hook

Granny Squares - make four, two with Light Blue centres and two with Berry.

Using either Light Blue or Berry create a magic ring (or ch4 and join with SS to form ring).

Round 1. Ch2, 2tr into ring, 2ch, *3tr, 2ch, repeat from * twice more, join with ss to beginning ch2. Break off yarn.

Round 2. Change to Camel and join in any corner space. Ch2, 2tr, 2ch, 3tr, 1ch, in that first corner space, *3tr, 2ch, 3tr, 1ch in next corner space, repeat from * twice more, join with ss to beginning ch2. Break off yarn.

Round 3. Change to Off White and join in any corner space. Ch2, 2tr, 2ch, 3tr, 1ch, in that first corner space, 3tr in middle space, ch1, *3tr, 2ch, 3tr in next corner space, ch1, 3tr in middle space, ch1, repeat from * twice more, join with ss to beginning ch2. Break off yarn.

Round 4. Change to Dark Grey and join in any corner space. Ch2, 2tr, 2ch, 3tr, 1ch in that first corner space, 3tr in next space, ch1, 2tr in next space, ch1, *3tr, 2ch, 3tr in next corner space, ch1, 3tr in next space, ch1, 3tr in next space, ch1, repeat from * twice more, join with ss to beginning ch2. Break off yarn.

To make up: sew your giant square together to form a loop, alternating the Light Blue and  Berry squares.

TA DA!

You could add more squares to make a longer cowl, I'm definitely going to try a wrap-around version in some super neon brights, or try it in a slightly less-chunky yarn for a more refined neck covering. Either way, your Zuma will keep you smiling all autumn (and winter) long.

Now go outside and look gorgeous.
